Give your subject a white background
Add a white background when the surrounding scene distracts from the person or object you want to show. A plain white background can make a photo easier to place in a document, presentation or consistent set of product pictures.
The tool first separates the main subject from its original background, then fills the surrounding area with white. It does not paint white over the subject or brighten the whole photo indiscriminately.
Keep your source image so you can compare the result and make another version later. A white-background copy is useful for a particular task, while the original preserves the full scene.
How to add a white background
- Choose a JPG, PNG or WebP photo with a clearly visible subject.
- Run background removal with white selected as the replacement.
- Review the outline and download the finished picture.
The first edit may take a little longer to start. Leave the browser tab open until processing is complete.
The tool works in your browser without an account. Each image must be within 40 MB and 24 megapixels. A batch can include up to 30 files with 160 MB of combined input.
Replacing a background is different from whitening the photo
If an off-white wall appears behind your subject, increasing brightness can also wash out the subject's details. Adding a white background instead changes the surroundings while retaining the visible subject as a cutout.
That separation is not always perfect. A white shirt against a pale wall or a translucent object can be difficult to distinguish from the background. Review light-colored edges carefully.
The photo's original lighting remains on the subject. A white background does not automatically remove a color cast, correct a reflection or create new studio lighting.
Check products against the white surface
For a product photo, inspect the full outline, including narrow handles, cords, straps and small gaps. A missing piece can make the item look different from the original.
Look at reflective and transparent surfaces too. Glass, glossy packaging and polished metal may carry the old background in their reflections or through the material. A new white area around the object does not guarantee that these internal reflections disappear.
Do not assume that any photo with a white background meets a marketplace's requirements. Check the current rules for that destination, including crop, dimensions, visible accessories and how much of the frame the product should occupy.
Keep centering and spacing consistent
This white background tool changes the background around the subject. If you also need the item centered with a repeatable amount of empty space, use the product photo editor.
Consistent framing can matter as much as the background color in a collection. A tiny item in one image and a tightly cropped item in another can still make a grid feel uneven even when both use white.
Choose enough space to show the complete subject. Do not crop off protruding parts merely to make the central body of the product look larger.
Choose a file format for the finished photo
JPG is a practical option when you need a solid white background and adjustable photographic compression. Review the quality around text, fine texture and contrasting edges after saving.
PNG can be useful when the image contains sharp graphic details or will continue through another editing step. A PNG file can have a white background too; the format does not mean every PNG must be transparent.
If you may need the same subject over several different colors later, save a separate transparent cutout. A white-background JPG does not retain the original transparent edge for easy reuse.
Review portraits and other subjects carefully
For a portrait, check hair, ears and the outline of clothing. Background removal can miss fine strands or blend a pale edge into the white replacement.
For an illustration or logo photographed on paper, make sure important white areas inside the subject remain visible. Automatic foreground selection is different from selecting every pixel of a particular color.
A white background also does not make a photo suitable for an official document by itself. Such uses can have separate requirements for pose, crop, lighting and dimensions. Use the relevant instructions when preparing that kind of image.
White background questions
Can I add a white background without changing the subject?
The tool aims to retain the foreground while replacing its surroundings, but selection can be imperfect. Compare the edges and small details with the original before using the result.
Will a white background remove shadows?
It replaces areas classified as background. A shadow may be retained partly, removed or selected imperfectly. Inspect the finished photo rather than assuming a particular shadow treatment.
Can I use a different background color?
Yes. The background tools also allow a chosen solid color. White is the starting choice on this page.
Do I need to sign in?
No. Processing happens in your browser. The first edit may take a little longer while the background remover loads.
Is this a generated studio background?
No. It creates a solid white background. It does not invent a studio scene, new lighting or additional props.
How can I make a transparent version instead?
Use the transparent background tool and save a PNG. Keep that copy when you need to place the subject on other backgrounds later.
