Create a cutout you can place anywhere
Make a transparent background when you want to reuse the subject without a rectangle of its original surroundings. A product, portrait or object can then sit over the background of another design.
Transparency means that those surrounding pixels are not filled with a visible color. It is different from a white background, even though both may look similar in a viewer with a white canvas.
This tool estimates the foreground and creates a transparent-background copy. Check the result before reusing it, particularly when the image contains fine hair, transparent material or colors that resemble the old background.
How to make a transparent background
- Add a JPG, PNG or WebP picture with a clear main subject.
- Process the image with transparency selected.
- Inspect the cutout and download a PNG to keep the transparent areas.
No account is required. The background-removal files may need to download on first use; keep the page open through that initial wait and the image processing.
The work happens in your browser. Each image is limited to 40 MB and 24 megapixels. You can process up to 30 files in a batch, with a maximum combined input size of 160 MB.
A checkerboard is a preview, not a background color
Many image editors use a checkerboard to show where a picture is transparent. The pattern helps you see the empty areas; it is not supposed to become part of the downloaded image.
A screenshot of a checkerboard preview is different. In that screenshot, the squares can become ordinary pixels, so the file may no longer contain real transparency. Download the actual PNG result rather than capturing the preview.
If a downloaded cutout appears on white in another app, that does not necessarily mean transparency has been lost. Place it over a colored background to check whether the surrounding areas are truly empty.
Choose an output that supports transparency
PNG is a useful choice for a transparent-background image you want to edit or share with another design tool. WebP can also support transparency when the receiving application accepts it.
JPG does not store transparent pixels. Saving the result as JPG adds a solid background, so use a separate JPG only when that is what the destination needs.
Keep a source with transparency if you expect to reuse the subject. A cutout saved on a white background cannot regain its original transparent edges simply by being converted back to PNG.
Inspect the edge on more than one background
A pale fringe may be invisible on white and obvious on dark blue. A dark outline may disappear against black but stand out in a light document. Check the cutout against colors relevant to your actual use.
Hair, fur, narrow straps and fine wires are common places to examine. So are holes inside handles and spaces between fingers or leaves. The tool may remove too much or retain a piece of the old background in these regions.
For translucent items, the old scene may influence color inside the subject itself. Making the surroundings transparent does not guarantee that reflections or see-through areas become neutral.
Transparent background editing does not change the subject's lighting
The subject keeps the lighting captured in the original photo. A strongly lit object placed over a dim background may still look out of place, even if its outline is clean.
Choose a new setting that suits the source, or use a different source photo when the mismatch is large. This tool does not generate new illumination or rebuild the subject for another scene.
For a simple product or document asset, a cutout can be enough. If you want a standardized product picture with a solid background, consistent padding and centered placement, use the product photo editor for the next step.
Select a source with useful detail
Start from the largest clear original available. A small preview may not include enough edge detail for a clean-looking cutout at a larger size.
Avoid tight source crops that already remove part of the subject. Background removal cannot restore a handle, a strand of hair or a product corner that was outside the photo.
In a batch, inspect every result before using it. Similar-looking photographs can have different separation problems, especially when the foreground and background share colors.
Transparent background questions
Does converting JPG to PNG make the background transparent?
No. Format conversion alone keeps the visible scene. This tool removes the estimated background, then PNG stores the resulting transparent areas.
Why does my PNG still look white?
The viewer may display transparency against white, or the image may actually contain white pixels. Place it over a colored background to tell the difference.
Can I make every background perfectly transparent?
Not reliably for every image. Fine edges, overlapping subjects, transparent objects and low contrast can lead to imperfect selection. Check the cutout against the original.
Can I remove the checkerboard from a screenshot?
A screenshot may contain the checkerboard as real pixels. Use the original image or an actual transparent download when available rather than relying on a captured preview.
Can I put the cutout on a white background later?
Yes. Keep the transparent PNG and use the white background tool or another editor to place it on white without losing your reusable cutout.
