Set image size for a specific use

Resize an image when a website, document or other destination needs a particular width or height. Changing image size adjusts the number of pixels in the picture, creating a copy at your chosen dimensions.

This is different from file-size compression. A 1000-pixel image can still have a large file size, depending on its content and format. Likewise, a small compressed file can have very large dimensions. Check whether your destination specifies pixels, kilobytes or both.

Keep the original image so you can make another size later. A reduced copy is useful for delivery, but it should not become your only version if future edits may need more detail.

Resize an image without stretching it

Keep the aspect ratio enabled when you want the same shape at a different size. Changing one dimension then keeps the other in proportion. This is usually the right choice for photographs, logos and illustrations.

If you enter unrelated width and height values with proportions unlocked, the image can become stretched or squeezed. A round object may turn oval, and a person's face may look wider or narrower.

When you need a different shape, crop first or use a background canvas that fits the destination. A square image requirement is not a reason to distort a rectangular photograph.

How to resize an image online

  1. Add the image or batch you want to resize.
  2. Enter the required width or height and choose whether to keep the aspect ratio.
  3. Process the pictures, review their dimensions and download the resized copies.

The image resizer works in your browser without an account. Input limits are 40 MB and 24 megapixels per picture. A batch can contain up to 30 files, with 160 MB of combined input.

Keep the tab open during processing. If a batch contains both portrait and landscape pictures, check how your chosen width or height affects each orientation. The same width does not produce the same height when aspect ratios differ.

Reduce image size before reducing quality too far

An original photograph can contain more pixels than a small website image needs. Resizing a delivery copy may reduce its file size while retaining more useful visible detail than an aggressive quality reduction at full dimensions.

Choose image size based on where the picture will appear. Consider whether the viewer can enlarge it, whether text must remain readable and whether the destination itself applies further scaling.

After resizing, check the actual exported file size if an upload limit also applies. Use compression as a separate finishing step when the dimensions are right but the file is still too large.

Enlarging is not the same as recovering detail

You can request larger dimensions, but making more pixels does not recreate fine information that was missing from the original. A small thumbnail enlarged for a full-page design may still look soft.

When you resize an image online for several destinations, make each version from the source rather than enlarging an earlier thumbnail. An original camera image, source graphic or full-size download is generally a better starting point than a preview saved from a message.

Judge the enlarged result at the size where it will be used. It may be acceptable for a small decorative image while unsuitable for a close-up product inspection or a large print.

Resize photographs and graphics with different checks

For a photograph, inspect faces and important textures after resizing. Fine detail can become less distinct when many source pixels are reduced to a smaller output.

For a screenshot or diagram, read the smallest text and inspect thin lines. If labels become unreadable, a larger output or a tighter crop may be more useful than simply changing the format.

For a transparent logo, preserve an output format that supports transparency, such as PNG or WebP. A JPG copy needs a solid background. Format and dimensions are separate choices, so decide both before downloading the final asset.

Image size questions

Can I resize an image online without stretching it?

Yes. Enable proportional resizing. When the required shape differs from the original, crop or add canvas space instead of squeezing the full picture.

Can I set only the width?

Yes. With proportions locked, the height follows the original shape. This is useful when a layout specifies a width without requiring a fixed shape.

How do I make an image square?

Use cropping if you want to remove part of a rectangular image. For a product that needs space around it, use the product photo editor to position the subject on a square canvas.

Does resizing make a file smaller?

Reducing dimensions often helps, but the final size also depends on format and export quality. Check both image size and file weight before uploading.

Can I resize several images together?

Yes, within the batch limits. Review portrait and landscape images separately when the same setting is applied to both.

Can I set image size for printing?

You can set pixel dimensions, but the result still needs enough source detail for the intended physical print size. Enlarging a small source does not make it equivalent to a high-resolution original.

Why does the resized image look distorted?

Check whether the aspect ratio was unlocked. Return to the original and keep proportions enabled unless stretching is intentional.
