Use image rotation to turn a picture upright

Rotate an image when a photo, scan or screenshot appears sideways or upside down. Image rotation changes its orientation so you can view, share or place it in a document the way you intended.

This image rotator also offers horizontal and vertical flipping. A flip mirrors the picture rather than turning it around its center. Choosing the right operation matters when the image contains text, a logo or an object whose left and right sides are different.

Keep the original and work on a copy. That lets you correct an accidental turn without having to reconstruct the earlier version.

Image rotation and flipping are different actions

Rotation turns the whole picture. A sideways document usually needs a quarter-turn; an upside-down photo needs a half-turn. Turning a rectangular picture by a quarter-turn also swaps which dimension is the width and which is the height.

A horizontal flip exchanges left and right. It can reverse a mirrored selfie, but it will also reverse any lettering or recognizable logo in the scene.

A vertical flip exchanges top and bottom. It is not the same as rotating an upside-down picture, because the left and right positions are treated differently. Preview the result instead of using these controls interchangeably.

How to rotate an image online

  1. Choose a photo or batch you want to adjust.
  2. Select the rotation and, if needed, a horizontal or vertical flip.
  3. Process the pictures, review their orientation and download the results.

The work runs in your browser without an account. Input limits are 40 MB and 24 megapixels for each image. A batch can contain up to 30 files and 160 MB of combined input data.

Leave the page open while processing. If your collection contains images with different orientations, separate them into groups. Applying the same turn to every picture will not necessarily make every picture upright.

Choose image rotation or mirroring by checking text

Text is a useful guide when you are unsure whether a picture needs rotation or a flip. If letters are upright but read backward, a horizontal flip may be appropriate. If the words read normally when you tilt your head, rotation is more likely to be the right action.

Check other clues too: clothing fasteners, product labels, directional arrows and familiar objects can reveal whether a mirrored result is intended.

For an image that contains both a mirrored reflection and normal surroundings, flipping the whole picture changes everything. This tool does not separately correct one reflected region.

Prepare a scan for reading or text recognition

An upright scan is easier to read in a document and provides a better starting point for text recognition. Correct the overall orientation before using the image-to-text tool.

Then check whether the writing itself is skewed. Turning a sideways page upright is not the same as correcting perspective from a photograph taken at an angle. A page that narrows toward one end or curves near a book spine may still need a better source photograph.

Crop unnecessary surrounding space after rotation. Keep full lines, headings and page numbers that you need, rather than cutting so tightly that important content disappears.

Save the result after image rotation

After rotation, you still need an output format. PNG is useful when a transparent graphic or sharp text needs to stay suitable for further editing. JPG may be practical for a photographic sharing copy. WebP can suit a supported web destination.

JPG output can introduce compression even when the visible edit is only rotation. Do not assume that the converted file is a lossless rearrangement of the original JPG data.

If transparent areas matter, choose a format that supports them. JPG needs a solid background, while PNG and WebP can retain transparency.

Review dimensions after image rotation

An image may meet a maximum-width requirement before rotation and exceed it afterward. A portrait picture and its landscape version use the same two dimensions in different directions.

Check the destination's requirements once the image is upright. Resize the corrected copy if needed, keeping the aspect ratio so the subject stays natural.

For a set of document scans, consistent rotation makes the pages easier to combine into a PDF. Review each page before merging, especially when a batch contains a mixture of portrait and landscape sheets.

Image rotation questions

Can I rotate an image online without signing in?

Yes. Select your picture, choose the orientation change and download the processed copy. Keep the tab open until it is ready.

Will image rotation remove part of the picture?

Quarter-turn orientation changes do not need you to choose a smaller content area. If you want to remove margins afterward, use the crop tool deliberately.

How do I fix a backward selfie?

Try a horizontal flip and inspect the result. Check any writing in the scene before deciding which version you want to keep.

Can I rotate several photos together?

Yes, within the file and batch limits. Group pictures by the correction they need rather than applying one rotation to unrelated orientations.

Does rotation straighten a photographed document?

It can correct the overall orientation, but it does not guarantee perspective correction or flatten curved pages. An evenly photographed source is still important.

Will the new copy overwrite my original?

The tool creates a result for download. Keep your source file so you can make a different adjustment later.
