Make a JPG copy of a PNG picture

Convert PNG to JPG when a form, website or recipient asks for a JPG file. This is often useful for photographs stored as PNG: a JPG copy can reduce the amount of data you need to send, depending on the original picture and the quality you choose.

PNG and JPG handle pictures differently. PNG is well suited to sharp graphics and transparency. JPG is designed for compact photographic images, using compression that can discard some visual information. The useful question is not which format is always better, but which one fits this particular delivery.

Your PNG stays unchanged. Use the JPG as a sharing copy and keep the PNG when you may need to edit the picture again.

Convert PNG to JPG with the right background

A transparent PNG can have empty areas around a logo, product or illustration. JPG cannot store that transparency. Those areas need a solid color when you convert PNG to JPG.

Choose a background that matches the place where the picture will appear. White is often a sensible choice for a document or a plain product page, while another color may suit a presentation. Check the outline of the subject after conversion. Partially transparent pixels along an edge will blend with your chosen background.

A white rectangle already painted into the PNG is different from a transparent area. Changing the export background will not remove that rectangle. Use the background remover first if you need to isolate the subject.

How to convert your PNG files

  1. Add a PNG picture, or select several PNG files for a batch.
  2. Choose JPG quality and the background color for any transparent areas.
  3. Convert, inspect the result and download your JPG copy.

The PNG to JPG converter works in your browser and does not require an account. Keep the tab open during processing. A batch can contain up to 30 files and 160 MB of input data; each picture is limited to 40 MB and 24 megapixels.

For a large collection, try one representative PNG first. A photograph, a logo and a screenshot can respond very differently to the same JPG setting.

Balance JPG quality against file size

A higher quality setting usually preserves more detail at the cost of a larger JPG. A lower setting may be appropriate for a small preview, but look for changes around fine texture, small lettering and strong color boundaries.

Check the JPG at the size where it will actually be used. A slight difference that disappears in a small thumbnail may be noticeable in a large product close-up. Conversely, inspecting every picture at extreme magnification can encourage a larger file than the destination needs.

If the output is still too large, dimensions may be the better adjustment. A photograph meant for a narrow content column rarely needs the same pixel dimensions as a print master. Resize a copy, then review its JPG quality.

When to keep the PNG instead

Keep PNG for an asset that must remain transparent, such as a logo placed over several different background colors. JPG would fix that asset to one background.

PNG can also be preferable for screenshots containing small interface text, line drawings, diagrams and other graphics where hard edges matter. JPG compression may create faint marks around letters or colored borders. If your destination accepts both formats, compare the actual files instead of assuming the smaller one is automatically suitable.

PNG to JPG conversion does not make a low-resolution image sharper. It also does not turn a flattened illustration into editable layers or a vector file.

PNG to JPG questions

Will I lose transparency?

Yes. JPG uses a solid background. Select the color before converting, and retain the original PNG if you need a transparent version later.

Is PNG to JPG lossless?

No. JPG uses lossy compression. Higher quality can make the difference less noticeable, but the converted file should not replace your original PNG when keeping every detail matters.

Can I convert a batch of PNG images?

Yes, within the batch and image limits shown above. Review a few different results before using the same settings for an entire collection.

Why is my JPG still large?

Large dimensions, detailed content and a high quality setting can all keep the size high. Try reducing quality carefully or use the compression tool for a file-size target; a target is not a guarantee.

Can changing the filename convert PNG to JPG?

No. Renaming the extension does not create JPG image data. Use the converter to make a file that applications can read as JPG.
