Save your JPG as a PNG file

Convert JPG to PNG when an editor, document workflow or upload form needs a PNG. The converter creates a PNG copy of the picture you already have. It does not reconstruct detail lost when the JPG was originally compressed.

That distinction matters for screenshots, artwork and photographs alike. A JPG with visible blocks or blurry lettering will still show those problems after conversion. PNG can preserve the image as it currently appears for your next step, but it cannot go back to the source that existed before the JPG was made.

Use the new PNG where it is required, and keep the original JPG so you can compare the two files.

How to convert JPG to PNG

  1. Select the JPG images you want to change.
  2. Keep PNG as the output and process the selected files.
  3. Check the resulting picture, then download your PNG copy.

You do not need an account. This JPG to PNG converter processes images in your browser. Leave the tab open while it works, especially when converting several large photographs.

You can process up to 30 files in a batch, provided the combined inputs stay within 160 MB. An individual JPG must be no larger than 40 MB and 24 megapixels. If a collection is too large, divide it into smaller groups instead of reducing the quality of every original.

PNG does not automatically mean transparent

PNG supports transparency, but a JPG picture does not contain a transparent background to preserve. Convert JPG to PNG and a white wall, colored backdrop or surrounding scene will still be visible.

To make a cutout, remove the background as a separate step and save that result as PNG. The transparent background tool is the better starting point when your real task is to isolate a product, person or logo.

The same applies to a checkerboard that is part of the actual image. If the pattern is painted into the JPG, converting formats will keep it. A checkerboard shown by an editor can represent transparency, but a screenshot of that checkerboard is simply a picture of the pattern.

Why the PNG may be larger

JPG saves space by compressing photographic detail. PNG stores the image using a different method, without the same kind of photographic compression. As a result, a PNG copy of a detailed JPG photograph may take substantially more space.

That increase does not mean new detail has appeared. You may have the same visible picture in a larger container. Use PNG when its format or editing behavior is useful, rather than as a routine upgrade for every photograph.

If the picture is intended for a website or an email attachment and JPG is accepted, keeping the JPG can be more practical. If you need an alternative web format, compare a WebP copy and check that the destination supports it.

Prepare a PNG for continued editing

A PNG copy can be helpful when you need to pass an image between tools that accept PNG or when you want to avoid another JPG save during an editing sequence. Work from the best JPG you have, rather than from a small messaging preview.

Keep the pixel dimensions appropriate for the next step. Conversion alone should not be treated as enlargement. If you need a smaller asset, use the resize tool and enter a deliberate size. Increasing the dimensions can make an image occupy more pixels, but it does not restore fine source detail.

For documents and presentations, inspect the PNG after inserting it. The application may display it at a different size from your preview. Small writing that looked readable in the original may become difficult to read when the picture is reduced.

JPG to PNG questions

Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?

No. It saves the current JPG image as PNG; it does not remove existing compression damage, sharpen missing details or increase the original resolution.

Will PNG keep my white background?

Yes. A visible white background remains part of the picture. Use background removal if you want transparent pixels around the subject.

Are JPEG and JPG both accepted?

Yes. JPEG and JPG are names for the same image format. Changing either one to PNG involves creating new image data, rather than just renaming the extension.

Can I use the PNG for printing?

You can provide it to a service that accepts PNG, but suitability still depends on the pixel dimensions and intended print size. The change of format alone does not make a small JPG suitable for a large print.

Can I change the PNG back later?

Yes, but keep your original JPG. If you later need JPG again, using the original avoids unnecessary conversion steps and additional lossy saves.
